Netanyahu's current government is extreme, with a history of struggle to hold office, with five elections in four years due to inability to form a stable majority. He returned to power last year by forming a coalition with the right-wing, leading to the most right-wing government in Israel's history.
His cabinet is stocked with extremists, including Itamar Ben Gavir, who has been convicted on eight charges. Betzel El Smotrich, Netanyahu's finance minister, has criticised the Palestinian people and advocated for victory through settlement, seizing land in the West Bank and driving Palestinians from their homes.
While settlements are widely considered against international law, Smotrich wants a massive expansion of them, and Netanyahu has given him a special role in charge of settlement affairs.
